Driftless Area landscape holds groundwater treasure deep within

SENECA - The Driftless Region in Southwest Wisconsin, Northwest Illinois, Northwest Iowa, and Southeast Minnesota is an ancient, intricately layered landscape that holds its treasure of clean, cold water deep within. Never run over by the glaciers that shaped the landscape in the rest of Wisconsin, its hydrogeology is made up of layers of different bedrock, many of which are riddled with cracks and fissures, caves, and underground rivers.

Tragedy and triumph in the duck world

VERNON COUNTY - My neighbor called to alert me that her flock of ducks had been wiped out the night before last. Only one duck survived the attack. She called to warn me for my own flock's sake, but also to ask if I could take in the one young survivor, a black-crested runner she had gotten from me a year ago.

Visit to remember

GAYS MILLS - Bobby was excited. He was going to be staying with his Grandma and Grandpa for a whole week while his mom and dad went on a trip. Bobby was seven years old and this would be the first time he'd spent any time away from his parents. Grandma and Grandpa lived on a small hobby farm about 100 miles from the city where Bobby lived. His parents dropped him off on their way to the airport early Saturday morning.

Beekeeping

GAYS MILLS - I have kept bees a couple times in the past. By that I mean I have owned hives, had the right equipment, managed the swarms that occupied the hives, and extracted and enjoyed some of the honey they produced. I have been very fortunate to have had the help of some serious, seasoned beekeepers to guide me as I entered bee kindergarten and progressed up until about I'd say bee third grade. I learned enough to know how much I don't know about bees and keeping them.
